Unmanageable Stories: Cultural Representations of the Middle Passage

Project Summary:

Project Description:

  • A SSHRC-funded, comparative, book-length project that examines representations of the Middle Passage in novels, plays, poetry, visual art, and film from Canada, the US, the UK and the Caribbean. Main research questions include: How is the Middle Passage representable, and on what terms? Given the traumatic nature of the Middle Passage, how do artists/writers offer legibility to such a violent history and experience? And, what is the ethical purpose of creative texts (visual and literary) in doing this work?
